What to check in the total price and cancellation terms before booking

A clear checklist for reviewing the full accommodation cost, deposit, currency, cancellation windows, house rules and payment terms.

01

Build the price from the final checkout summary

Accommodation pricing can include nightly charges, a cleaning charge, taxes, a deposit or other clearly stated items. The relevant number is the final amount shown for the dates, guest count and currency you selected. A lower nightly rate can still produce a higher total when the stay length or additional charges differ.

Check when payment is collected and whether a security deposit is charged, pre-authorised or handled separately. Never send card details by ordinary email. Payment should be completed only through the secure booking path shown for the property.

02

Read cancellation terms as a timeline

Look for the date and local time by which a cancellation remains refundable, what percentage or amount becomes non-refundable after each deadline, and whether any charges are excluded from a refund. Terms can vary by property, rate plan and booking date, so a general website description should never replace the terms displayed before payment.

Consider the uncertainty in the trip. A flexible rate may be more useful for changing travel plans even when it costs more. A stricter rate may suit a confirmed trip, but only when the financial consequence of cancellation is understood.

03

Check the rules that can affect the stay

Confirm check-in and check-out times, maximum occupancy, visitor rules, pets, smoking, events, quiet hours and any age or identity requirements shown by the booking service. These terms are part of the booking decision, not details to discover after payment.

Ask before booking when a material requirement is unclear. Examples include accessibility, parking dimensions, equipment for children, long-stay servicing or permission for a specific use. Written confirmation is more reliable than assumption.

04

Keep evidence of the booking you accepted

Save the confirmation, receipt and terms supplied at booking. If something changes, start with the support route in the confirmation because it is tied to the reservation. Use urgent or emergency instructions in that confirmation when time matters; ordinary email may not be immediate.

A clear booking process should let the guest see the property, live dates, final total and applicable terms before payment. Artificial urgency or unsupported claims should not replace that information.
